The state of Jammu & Kashmir is situated in the northernmost part of India, and is nestled in the foothills of Himalayas. The state shares its international borders with Pakistan and Tibet. Jammu & Kashmir is the sixth largest state in India including the area occupied by Pakistan and China. The snowcapped mountains and sheer beauty of Jammu & Kashmir has earned it the name ‘Heaven on Earth’ or ‘Paradise on Earth’. It is the most picturesque destination in the northern part of India.

The entire state of Jammu & Kashmir can be broadly classified into three topographic regions, namely the plains of Jammu, the Kashmir Valley and the mountainous Ladakh. Despite the past few years of unfortunate disturbance in the valley of Kashmir, its beauty remains unfazed by the happenings around it. Jammu & Kashmir is the land where the past still has a living presence. It is blessed with numerous unmatched attractions. The major destinations worth visiting are:

Gulmarg: Gulmarg is a green undulating city situated in the Baramula district of Jammu & Kashmir. It is in the shape of a bowl. Gulmarg has grassy slopes and is surrounded by hills from all sides. In spring, it looks like “The Meadow of Flowers”. During winters, it is famous for Skiing. Gulmarg is often referred to as ‘Switzerland of India’, due to its unparalleled natural beauty. The natural beauty of the place is sublime. The town houses 18 hole Green Golf Course, which is the highest in the world. The northern Pir Pinjal Range is considered a perfect location for trekking.

Sonamarg: Sonamarg is a quite valley, since it has quiet meadows and flower-carpeted fields. The literal meaning of Sonamarg is “The Golden Meadow”. Sonamarg is the Gateway to Ladakh. It has some of the highest mountain ranges of the world. Enveloped by alpine trees, Sonamarg is a base camp for the holy Amarnath Yatra. The amazing glaciers, snowfields, plateaus, waterfalls and lakes are the source of tourism in Sonamarg.

Pahalgam: Pahalgam is located at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the river Lidder. It is also known as “Valley of Shepherds”. Pahalgam is famous for its beautiful scenery, streams and springs. The Pahalgam Wildlife Sanctuary is a major attraction of this place.

Srinagar: Srinagar is the summer capital of the state, situated in the western part of Jammu & Kashmir. The city thrives on both the sides of River Jhelum. Srinagar is a mixture of various cultural influences, with a Hindu, Mughal and Sikh past. This place has several lakes, sacred pilgrimages and beautiful gardens. Srinagar is also known as the ‘City of Lakes’. Dal Lake and Wular Lake are the major attractions in Srinagar. These lakes are famous all over India for their beauty. It is worth taking a ride in the lakes in Shikaras and Houseboats. The other tourist spots are Hazratbal shrine and the Mughal Gardens.

Mata Vaishno Devi Temple: Vaishnodevi temple is one of the most revered sacred sites of the Hindus. This temple is the principal attraction for the pilgrims, and is dedicated to Mother Goddess Vaishno Devi. Goddess has been endowed with supernatural powers. It is believed that one can get through every kind of pains by visiting this temple and worshipping mother goddess. Most of the tourists who come to Jammu & Kashmir have the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine as their destination.

Raghunath Temple: This temple is situated in the heart of the city and is dedicated to Lord Rama. It is the largest temple complex in northern India, surrounded by a group of other temples. The inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheet on three sides. The inner part of the temple houses gigantic statues of deities and many lingams. The surrounding temples are dedicated to other gods and goddesses from the epic, Ramayana. The construction of the temple was started in 1835 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and completed by his son, Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1860.

In Jammu &Kashmir, one can also indulge into winter adventure sports in nature’s laps. The hills, mountains and meadows are ideal for trekking, rock climbing and camping activities. Apart from these, sports such as white water rafting, diving, water skiing and ice skating.
